RELLIS Campus May 2025 Update by Ben Scales

Collateral Damage-Understanding Roof Vulnerability

On June 24th, NABCTA will host an informative Lunch and Learn session titled "Collateral Damage-Understanding Roof Vulnerability at the RELLIS Campus specifically designed for AEP students and working professionals in construction, architecture and engineering. This practical and highly educational session will equip participants with critical insights into one of the construction industry's most frequently misdiagnosed problems: water intrusion.

Benjamin Scales, an industry expert in building enclosures and litigation consulting, will lead the presentation, emphasizing the importance of correctly diagnosing water intrusion issues. Although roof leaks often receive immediate blame, many times the actual source is unrelated to the roof system itself. Participants will learn how to methodically differentiate roof leaks from other issues such as improper HVAC installations, condensation due to inadequate ventilation, and compromised flashing and penetrations. Attendees will leave better prepared to identify root causes accurately, minimizing unnecessary repairs and costly litigation.

The session will underscore practical, actionable strategies for early risk identification, accurate diagnosis, and preventative detailing to significantly reduce collateral damage and associated litigation risk. As roofing and adjacent systems remain the primary line of defense against environmental factors, such a discussion is invaluable for both current practitioners and those soon entering the professional field.

Advanced Nuclear Reactor Initiative at RELLIS

In a groundbreaking development for the RELLIS Campus, Texas A&M University recently announced its involvement in the Advanced Nuclear Reactor Initiative. This bold research and innovation project partners Texas A&M with industry-leading companies, including Kairos Power, Natura Resources, Aalo Atomics, and Terrestrial Energy. Together, they aim to explore the development of advanced, safer, and more efficient nuclear reactors, setting the stage for significant advancements in sustainable energy technology.

This initiative positions Texas A&M and the RELLIS Campus at the forefront of pioneering energy research, with potential long-term implications for energy production and sustainability both regionally and globally. Students and researchers will have unprecedented opportunities to engage directly in cutting-edge projects, gaining hands-on experience that aligns closely with industry demands and contemporary global challenges.
